SharePoint data source - authentication method service principal not working

It seems that the authentication method 'service principal' does not work for the SharePoint datasource in Power BI service -> dataset -> settings - edit credentials. By reading some documentation it seems that the only way to get data from the SharePoint API is via client certificates, maybe why it does not work (anymore) for client secrets. I presume this uses the SharePoint resource 'https://microsoft.sharepoint.com' and not the Graph resource 'https://graph.microsoft.com/' under the hood.   Kind regards ... View more

Snowflake DirectQuery query folding failing since "Version: 2.126.927.0 64-bit (February 2024)"

Following update to "Version: 2.126.927.0 64-bit (February 2024)" we're seeing reports with direct query connections to Snowflake tables / views triggering "We couldn't fold the expression to the datasource" errors where they used to work fine last week. We've not managed to isolate the precise feature that's causing the problem but here are some of the things that the report uses: query parameters to perform simple filters on table contents in M code DAX measures calculating networking days on a milestone table A bar chart visual which combines task lengths with analytics constant lines using the DAX measures from 2 above A "is not empty" filter on one table that propogates to a few other tables We've not manage to reproduce the issue in a standalone PBIX file (to share for debug). We've not been able to find an installer for the previous version to allow us to continue maintaining this report whilst we resolve this issue (see here: https://community.fabric.microsoft.com/t5/Desktop/What-was-last-week-s-PBI-Desktop-update-about/m-p/3710454#M1208608). We've not managed to find release notes for what this update was intending to do (to figure out if the issue is on our side). We're effectively blocked by a bad upgrade as far as we can see. If going back to an older version solves the problem, then something changed in the new version that may have caused the problem.

Issue with Template App Upgrade

I have a template app workspace, that is being used to install app copies for my clients.   For some time there is a possiblity to upgrade Temaplate App to new version (old one will be not supported from 1th of May). I have tried to use "Upgrade now" option for several times. And each time it results with "Upgrading" communicate that stays for long time. Finnaly the app will be never updated.   The problem is that end clients are able to upgrade apps that has been installed based on my template app. And once they do this, it is not possible to install new version on app on their side. ... You may try to ppload your updated semantic model and make sure to overwrite the existing semantic model.

  • If the .pbix file you're uploading has the same name as the semantic model and report used in the app, uploading will overwrite the existing semantic model.

  • If you're changing the name of the semantic model and report used in the app, and the .pbix file you want to upload has a different name than the semantic model and report used in the app, do the following:

    • Rename the semantic model and report used in the app so that their names exactly match the name of your updated .pbix file.
    • Upload your .pbix file and overwrite the existing semantic model and report that you just renamed.

    In either case, to upload a local .pbix file to the service, select Upload > Browse, navigate to the file, and select Open. A dialog will ask for your permission to overwrite the semantic model the app uses. If you don't overwrite the existing semantic model, customers won't be able to install your updated app.

Azure reference layer disappears when published to Power BI service?

Something has chnaged since yesterday. All was working well yesterday and no changes have been made to the file or data.  We have an Azure reference layer on our maps as below, outline black  This has been working fine, we have published to the Power BI service and the map can be used and seen by our end users, new users shown this yesterday and was working as expected.  Today I have gone to look at this and the reference layer can not be seen on the Power BI service, as below  I can see the layer is still in the visual under format on the service, I have checked the desktop PBIX file and the layer is there and is visible when looking at it in desktop, but as soon as it is published to the service the layer is no longer visible.  Anyone know what is happening? ... Test as role "not supported" message for composite model

I have report which uses a composite data model, with a mix between DirectQuery to other Power BI datasets and some imported tables from SQL Server. The model also uses calculation groups, allthough I do not think this is related to the issue.   The data model also has RLS, and I can test this in desktop and it works as intended.  However, when I publish the report to the service and I want to "test as role", I get the following error message. Please check if SSO is enabled. The Test as role/View as role feature doesn't work for DirectQuery models with single sign-on (SSO) enabled.

 

Through my testing, dq schema connection to sql server data source mixed with import schema of sql server's composite model, RLS takes effect. lc schema connection to power bi dataset then converted to dq schema and then mixed with import schema data source, RLS is not supported.

New/existing Measures: Format could not be changed to 'Text'

Dear Power BI community,   unfortunatelly I'm not able to change my measure formats to 'Text' in multible semantic models. This issue occurs for new and existing explicit measures in Power BI Desktop and Tabular Editor 2. Without this functionality I'm not able to apply conditional formating logic or use SVG DAX measures. I can't reproduce your problem, I created a measure="This is text", as per your sample.
Format is still the text option and it works fine for me.
I see you mentioned that you are using the MS store version, would downloading the latest version from the official download link solve your problem?

TOM property not deployed to Semantic model (dataCoverageDefinition) - Hybrid table setup

I'm trying to deploy a property dataCoverageDefinition in my semantic model's partition. I need this for a hybrid model setup, where one partition is set to direct query, and the other one to Import.   According to the documentation, an additional property needs to be deployed to the directquery partition to make sure Power BI does not perform any unnecessary queries in direct query mode. https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/analysis-services/tom/table-partitions?view=asallproducts-allversions   Compatibility has been set to 1604. Property has been set into the DirectQuery partition. Script runs succesfully, but the property cannot be found when re-opening the script of the datamodel. It seems like you’re doing everything correctly according to the documentation. The property should indeed provide a hint regarding the data that is covered by the partitionDataCoverageDefinition. This property is supported when the compatibility level of the database is at 1603 or above, which is the case in your situation (1604).

However, if the property is not found when re-opening the script of the data model, it might be due to some issues with the deployment process. You could try using the Deployment Wizard for deploying model solutions. It uses JSON output files generated from an SQL Server Analysis Services project as input files, which are easily modifiable to customize the deployment.

Looking for a fix regarding automation ids

Posting this here on @lbendlin suggestion   To generate PBIP files, I need to manipulate the elements in Power BI using their automation ids to perform the following steps - Click Save As, Select PBIP extension, save the file; this will generate PBIP folders.   To automation conversion of PBIP to PBIX, we do something similar. Open the PBIP file, Save As, Select PBIX extension, save the file; this will generate PBIX file. Its been confirmed from documentation that there is no other way to convert PBIP to PBIX   My question is this 1. When exploring the version 2.124.2028.0 64-bit (December 2023), i find that most of the items i need, their automation ids are either blank or are strings which are not being recognised. There are issues with the class names as well. Is there some issue in the automation ids / class name in recent releases? Is there any fix? I have tried Inspect and Spyxx tools, is there any other way to see the automation ids?     Notice that the automation id is a string when it should be a integer as it was in the previous versions. When using automation id specified in the screenshot element cannot be found. Same is the result with ClassName, Name, Control Type. ... View more

Based on the above information, this issue is complex which may need to collect log files for further troubleshooting. Since community support engineers don't have that access, I would suggest opening a Support Ticket. If you are a Power BI Pro or Fabric licensee, you can create a support ticket for free and a dedicated Microsoft engineer will come to solve the problem for you.

Admin monitoring refresh failure

Hello, The datasets in the new Admin monitoring workspace wont refresh anymore. Also it is not possible as an Power BI admin to get an Admin role for this workspace. So i can't check te dataset settings. Hi All, New to Fabric and Power BI using Trial version of fabric.  Created few workspaces including Lakehouse and warehouse. Tried to create a table using simple statement in available warehouses but getting below error message: Started running query at line 1 The external policy action 'Microsoft.Sql/Sqlservers/Databases/Schemas/Tables/Create' was denied on the requested resource. Please ensure that the warehouse where you’re trying to create the table has the necessary permissions. You might have the permissions on a new warehouse, but not on the ones created earlier. you may check whether the data source corresponding to your report (such as Fabric Warehouse) has given the correct permissions.
The error message mentions an external policy action being denied. This could mean that there’s a policy in place that’s preventing the creation of tables. You might need to check with your administrator if there are any such policies.

Too many requests when using Google Sheets connector

I use the Google sheets connector in Power Query to get information from several Google Sheets into several datasets. It worked great but somehow since a couple of months I am reaching the limit for some reason and get a 429 Too Many Requests error almost everytime the dataflow refreshes. To lower the times the Google sheets API calls I created dataflows per google sheet and scheduled those all dataflows on different times, so they don't run at the same time, but still the refreshes fail more often than succeed. It seems that even getting data from one google sheet makes a lot of calls to the API.   I tried some suggestions I found: Using Table.buffer -> no succes Exponential backoff in Power Query ->Was not able to get that to work properly (https://developers.google.com/sheets/api/limits#quota) Increasing the quota limits -> If I login to https://console.cloud.google.com/apis/dashboard with the user I also use in the google sheet connector I don't see any usage and I think it is not possible to increase it. I saw a similar issue in the Power Automate forum (https://powerusers.microsoft.com/t5/Using-Connectors/API-requests-limit-when-using-Google-Sheets-connector/m-p/2470306#M20748), I guess in Power Automate it is easier to use Exponential backoff, but still it seems like a problem.  429 Too Many Requests error. This error is typically due to hitting the Google Sheets API’s quota limits.

It sounds like you are trying to refresh a Power BI dataset that includes a calculated table that depends on another table that uses Direct Query mode to connect to an Analysis Services data source. Unfortunately, Power BI does not currently support refreshing datasets that include calculated tables that depend on tables using Direct Query mode.

One solution you could consider is to change the source data for the calculated table so that it does not use Direct Query mode. This would allow you to refresh the dataset, but you would need to find a way to incorporate the data from the Direct Query source into the calculated table using other means, such as using Power Query to merge or append the data.

Another option is to use a separate dataset for the calculated table, and then use a measure or a report-level filter to control the data displayed in the report based on the data in the calculated table. This would allow you to refresh the main dataset without affecting the calculated table.

It's also worth noting that Power BI recently introduced the ability to refresh datasets that include calculated columns, so you may want to consider using calculated columns instead of a calculated table if that meets your needs.
