Unable to change the Semantic Model a report is linked to

Having this issue since the October 2024 launch, functionality previously existed: change data source of report from Semantic Model A (SMA) to Semantic Model B (SMB) instead.

In the Desktop version of PBI, I have a report open that is currently linked to SMA. I've loaded SMB into the same workspace that SMA exists (close copy, slight changes in column names and table names to standardize).

Within the report, I go to 'Transform Data' -> 'Data source settings' and it opens up to the screen below. This does not have the option to change source, only to connect to additinal models. Same results if I go to 'File' -> 'Options and settings' -> 'Data source settings'.

There used to be a button "Change source" that would allow me to choose SMA and then change it to SMB. I can't figure out how to change the semantic model a report is linked to and don't want to manually recreate every report page, visual, and filter setting.

Status: Investigating

Hi @spicydisaster ,

If I understand correctly, if you connect to SMA from Power BI Desktop using live connection mode, you will not be able to modify this data source in Power BI Desktop, this is by design and an unsupported feature that I have been testing in Power BI Desktop for the last six months.

You can try other connection modes such as import and the change datasource feature works fine.
