Sudden large increase in refresh times or complete failures

At the company I work for, the executives rely on MANY Power BI reports, which were built by colleagues or myself, over the course of years; these reports are connected to dataflows or semantic models in Pro license Power BI workspaces.  Last week, we suddenly experienced extremely large spikes in the time of refresh on these models--all of them which typically took 20-30 mins to refresh are now taking upwards of 2-3 hours or more, and in many cases even failing outright (after we've already waited for several hours), which means they sometimes take 8-10 TOTAL hrs to retry multiple refreshes and have one finally succeed.  This is causing an enormous amount of stress for my colleagues and I, who are responsible for maintaining such reports, and the executives or management are not able to look at the necessary data that they need to review, to make critical business decisions.  Many of these data models have been refreshing normally for at least 6 months or even more than a year, without any changes.  Clearly, Microsoft has changed something which affects our capacity, and it is unacceptable.
1) Is anyone else experiencing this or similar issues of performance?

2) Microsoft, please fix this and be more transparent about what is causing this issue.

    Hi annablanchette

Based on the information you have provided so far, it is not possible to determine the exact cause of the slow refresh. You will need to provide more information:
    1. Are there a specific few reports that are experiencing slow refreshes or errors or are they all affected? Do they correspond to the same data source or different data sources?
    2. What data sources are associated with the reports that are having problems?
    3. I see in the screenshot that there are a couple of refresh errors, what are the specific error messages?

  • Anonymous I have copied your questions & added my corresponding answers in blue:

    1. Are there a specific few reports that are experiencing slow refreshes or errors or are they all affected? Do they correspond to the same data source or different data sources?

This is affecting all reports.  My colleagues who work on Power BI reports are also experiencing these issues.  The reports correspond to several different shared dataflows which seem to be refreshing as usual, and which have not been changed since we began experiencing these issues.

    2. What data sources are associated with the reports that are having problems?

This is answered above.  The data sources are dataflows which are properly built & have not been changed.  They simply reference SQL servers.

    3. I see in the screenshot that there are a couple of refresh errors, what are the specific error messages?

Refer to screenshot below for the error message:

  • Update: It turns out it was our VPN which had an update around the same time and was causing these connection timeouts.

Hello, since the last update (2.136.1202.0) we are also experiencing time outs upon refreshing our cosmos power BI data views.

The queries have not changed and were previously taking seconds, now we are waiting minutes and this error pops up. The only thing that has changed is the software version. Running the same query within the azure platform directly takes seconds as expected, it's just an issue with PowerBI desktop application. Please advise.
