SharePoint: Request failed: Unable to connect to the remote server

Dear all,

I would like to ask about one case

Whenever connect to sharepoint, I usually post a url as format https://<site address>/sites/<sitename>/, howerver it turn out the error as" Details: "SharePoint: Request failed: Unable to connect to the remote server".

I have tried to clear cache power BI, get the most updated version, log out and log in, however it still unable to connect.

I have also tried to connect to url which get to the direct file, for example as: https://vndirect.sharepoint.com/Quanlyhoso/Shared%20Documents/Ch%E1%BA%A5m%20ch%E1%BB%A9ng%20t%E1%BB...".

Howerver it still get the error "SharePoint: Request failed: Unable to connect to the remote server".

One friend of mine in the same company she can connect to sharepoint as usual, whenever I cannot.

Is this because of problem like firewall or not ? please give me any suggestion if you have.

thanks and best regards,

@anhnguyenhoang1,

Do you connect to Excel file stored in SharePoint Online? If so, please use web connector in Power BI Desktop.

In your scenario, please firstly go to File->Options and Settings->Data Source Settings->Global permissions in Power BI Desktop and clear permissions for stored sharepoint data source.

Secondly, to connect to Excel that is located under Documents of SharePoint online site, please use the URL below.
https://xxxxx.sharepoint.com/sites/<sitename>/Shared%20Documents/<Yourexcename>.xlsx

To connect to Excel that is located under a folder in SharePoint online Documents, please use the URL below.
https://xxxxx.sharepoint.com/sites/<sitename>/Shared%20Documents/<Foldername>/<Yourexcename>.xlsx

However, if you want to connect to Sharepoint online folder in Power BI Desktop, please use SharePoint Folder connector and use the URL below.
https://xxxxx.sharepoint.com/sites/<sitename>

Lydia

Hi,

As I already said that, when I'm trying to connet by web, I have this kind of error.

Details: "SharePoint: Request failed: https://vndirect.sharepoint.com/Quanlyhoso/Shared Documents/Chấm chứng từ 2018/Báo lỗi CS năm 2018_xlsx/_api/contextinfo"

@anhnguyenhoang1,

Have you cleared permissions in Power BI? Could you please use fiddler to trace the connection process and provide trace log here?

Lydia

Hi,

Sorry for using a diffrent user, since the old one I have forgot my password.

I have clear permission and then try to reconnect it as the topic in here https://community.powerbi.com/t5/Integrations-with-Files-and/Power-BI-Desktop-Excel-Online-Datasourc... but still does not work.

Why is that related to connetion process ? I would try to use fidder and add the log soon.

Hi, I could not give you the log by using fidder now, but I wondering about my case, any solution other than clear permission and then try to reconnect it, since my co- worker she is able to connect with Sharepoint. Howerver when she connected and downloaded the pbix file and send back to me, then I not able to refresh the data from Sharepoint.

To summary what I have done:

Firstly, when I tried to connected by choosing data source as Sharepoint, it has the error as " Unable to connect to remote server".

Secondly, when I trying to connect by choosing the source as Web, it has the error as mentioned in the topic https://community.powerbi.com/t5/Desktop/Error-connecting-to-SharePoint-online/td-p/157696.

When my co- worker connect to the Sharepoint link and save as a pbix copy, then send it back to me. However I cannot refresh it, when I tried to refresh it has the error as mentioned in the above topic.

I have tried in to do as the following ways:

- Clear cache power bi, get the most updated version in December, but it still does not work.

- Clear permission and then log in again as my organisational account.

However it still does not work.

What I concern it, or does this problem associated with the problem of permission, only user with pro license can connect to Sharepoint, or anything related to firewall, since I see i got the " remote server" in the error notification whereas I have not connect to any thing remote.

Please reply me as soon as possible, since it really urgent for me.

Thanks you so much, Hope to get reply from you soon.

@anhnguyenhoang1,

It has nothing to do with pro license or firewall. I am unable to reproduce this issue on my side. Could you please enable tracing and share trace log here?

In addition, what is the result if you directly connect to the file in Power BI Service?

Lydia
