Power BI: Invalid Data Credentials after switching to new computer and migrating Gateway

I'm having difficulty refreshing my reports due to "invalid connection credentials". My credentials have not changed, but I did switch to a new computer and migrated the gateway to the new computer using the recovery key. The data source is an excel file hosted in OneDrive. The path starts with "c:\users\username\onedrive - companyname\".

To troubleshoot, I tried re-entering the credentials for each data source using the following:

  • Username: domain\username
  • Password: domain password

The credentials fail to update due "invalid connection credentials." I verified that my domain, username, and password are all correct by logging into the computer using the same credentials I am entering for the dataset.

Hi @msp ,

I don't quite understand what you mean, are you saying that you are updating the data source with invalid credentials that cannot be updated? Or are you saying that the refresh failed showing an invalid credential error?
Did you reconfigure the data source for the new gateway to see if it worked?

Best regards.

Hi @Anonymous, Appreciate your response.

  • Are you saying that you are updating the data source with invalid credentials that cannot be updated? Or are you saying that the refresh failed showing an invalid credential error?
    • Both. After switching computers and migrating gateway to a new computer, the refresh failed showing an invalid credential error. I tried to remediate by entering my credentials but they cannot be updated because I am getting an invalid credential error from that screen as well.
  • Did you reconfigure the data source for the new gateway to see if it worked?
    • I believe so, but I don't know how to see if it actually worked. From the datasource settings, everything seems to be mapped correctly. The Gateway Connection settings show that it's trying to use the gateway installed on the new computer (see below)Screenshot 2022-11-15 081624.png

I had admin privileges on my old computer, which did not have these issues, but do not have admin privileges on the new computer. I installed the Gateway with temporary admin credentials. Could that be causing the issue?

Edit: I installed a personal mode gateway on my old computer (which I no longer have admin privileges on) and am able to refresh reports through that gateway. I can use this as a temporary workaround, but looking for a permanent solution. Does that indicate that something is wrong with the regular gateway on my new computer? Possibly the admin privileges alluded to above?

Hi @v-caitlyn-mstf, Following up on this issue as my workaround is no longer working.
