Power BI Desktop crash - March 2023 Release version 2.115.663.0 (x86)

Hallow everyone,

after updating Power BI desktop from version 2.114 (Feb 2023 Release) to the March 2023 version, the app crashed immediately on startup giving an error that an external component has thrown an exception. the application is installed on a windows server 2012 R2, some error details are below.

I thought I would roll back to Dec. 2022 version to see if it works, I unfortunatlly don't have the 2.114 setup file anymore.

Please help.

Hi all,

Update:

Power BI released the latest version 2.115.842.0 64-bit (March 2023) , please download it to see if the problem still exists.

Download Microsoft Power BI Desktop from Official Microsoft Download Center

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We have seen this issue submitted by engineers on our internal platform to the product team.

Problem: After installing Power BI Desktop "March 2023 Update (2.115.663.0) " version, there was a startup error "External Component has thrown an exception"

They have been aware of the issue and the engineers will do their best to resolve it. I will update here if there is any progress, so please be patient.

Best regards.

This issue finally got be to sign up, so here goes.

Same issue, and have been hesitating to update to April's release. Would love to know the status.

On a related note, I noticed a few other instances of people reporting this and another admin suggesting its the .NET version, but haven't checked that out. Seems like that would impact both 32 and 64?

For those of you wondering about the April 2023 release (2.116.622.0 released 4/11/23), I tried it on an impacted system yesterday and it did not fix the issue.

@v-xiaoyan-msft - any update??

Anyone joining late, this issue appears to impact the 32-bit version only and the current work-around is to roll back to the Feb 2023 version:

You can find the older versions here:

Previous monthly updates to Power BI Desktop and the Power BI service - Power BI | Microsoft Learn

There are download links for both 64-bit and 32-bit versions at the bottom of the "February 2023 Update (2.114.664.0)" section.

@v-xiaoyan-msft

Any update on this issue?

Thanks for reporting the issue! We resolved a regression introduced by the March release of 32-bit version of Power BI Desktop which caused excessive ‘External Component has thrown an exception’ SEHException errors. Please download the latest 32-bit release from Download Center. Keep in mind, that this generic error can still occur for same scenarios as before March release. Please report any issues using standard support channels or consider using 64-bit version of Power BI Desktop.

@Justin_PBI - Thanks. We've been doing some testing today with the latest 32-bit version (2.116.844.0 released 4/21/2023).  Upgrading to this version does appear to resolve the crashing issue for impacted users.
