Does PowerBI Service support multiple DirectQuery data sources on one report?

Does PowerBI Service support multiple DirectQuery data sources on one report?

We are facing a problem specific to SingleStore PowerBI Connector while we are querying data from two separate SingleStore databases via PowerBI. A single Power BI report with two DirectQuery connections to SingleStore does not work, but gives us an error message in each visual. Error message attached.

We can change one of the two SingleStore connections to use Import mode instead of DirectQuery and the problem goes away. This, however, is not a long-term solution as the data volume is already too large for Import mode refreshes to be practical, and it is expected to grow substantially in the near term.

We are familiar with composite models but unfortunately they won't satisfy our need because it implies usage of Direct AND Import modes. We’re interested whether PowerBI Service itself supports multiple DirectQuery connections, because PowerBI Desktop does. If it does, what are the differences between PowerBI Service and PowerBI Desktop that affect it?PowerBI_Error.JPG

Hi @jchambers ,

Do you have data source credentials and gateways configured for both data sources?

We have two data sources on the gateway, each configured with different credentials when connecting to SingleStore.
We have tested both 1) the scenario where both connections in the model use the same gateway data source and 2) the scenario where the connections in the model use different data sources (and therefore distinct credentials to SingleStore).
Both of these scenarios result in the same error message.

I'm really just interested in a direct answer to this question:

We’re interested in whether PowerBI Service itself supports multiple DirectQuery connections because PowerBI Desktop does. If it does, what are the differences between PowerBI Service and PowerBI Desktop that affect it?

If so, I can work with the SingleStore engineers to determine why it's not working.

Thank you,
