Compete to become Power BI Data Viz World Champion! First round ends August 18th. Get started.

Credentials are sometimes required... but there is no combination that gets you in!

I have encountered situations in PowerBI Report Builder where credentials were required, but no matter what I type, I cannot log in! This has happened when I try to use:

  • The Query Designer box
  • The Run function
  • The Validate Query function

I am trying to follow along with the "Paginated Reports in a Day" YouTube series, but it is difficult when I keep running into this problem. I am even running into it on their solution files!

I have discovered that this is a common enough issue that it is addressed in this article, but the article's suggested method of fixing the problem -- to save and close the file and then reopen it again -- does not work.

Hi @Anonymous ,

In Report Builder, credentials are often used when you connect to a report server or for data-related tasks, such as creating an embedded data source, running a dataset query, or previewing a report. Credentials are not stored in the report. They are managed separately on the report server or on the local client.

Access to Report Builder depends on the following factors:

  • Role assignments or permissions that make Report Builder available to individual users or groups.

  • Authentication settings that determine whether user credentials can be passed through to the report server.

Please check if these artcles help

Hi @Anonymous,

I suppose I may not have been clear enough in my original post. So let me explain the problem in more detail:

I am trying to follow along with the "Paginated Reports in a Day" YouTube series. (To find the labs they have to work on, go to this link, scroll down to the Attendee kit section, and click the link to download the attendee kit.) This is important because I am trying to complete Lab 04A at the moment.

What happened is this:

First, I opened up the file, and followed the directions to complete task 1. Things went fine until step 24 (preview the report). After it switched to Report Preview mode, the whole software froze up and I was forced to close it using the taskbar. This wiped out all my progress thus far.

On my second try:

First, I opened up the completed file from Lab 03A, as per the instructions. Then I continued following the instructions thru Task 1, step 3 and opened up the Dataset Properties window to the Query section. Next, I opened the Query Designer window. But the Query Designer window wanted me to log in. I tried inputting my credentials with which I purchased PowerBI in the first place, but it didn't work. I tried many other combinations, anything I thought it could possibly be, and it still didn't work.

Then I went and made a different post here, where someone responded with a link to this article saying that NO credentials will work in this scenario. The article suggests I save my work, completely close Report Builder, and then reopen it. But when I tried that, I was faced with the same result!

I eventually figured out how to design the parameter manually (using the Parameters section, as described in steps 16-19). However, when I got to step 24 (run the report), I was once again asked for login credentials. When I typed in my credentials, I received the folllowing error message: Unable to connect.png

When I clicked OK, it took me back to the login screen. When I clicked OK again, it took me back to this error message. When I clicked OK one more time, the error message went away and I was faced with a blank canvas that just said "One or more data sources is missing credentials."

Unfortunately I believe these to be one and the same glitch, the same one described in the above article in which no credentials will work.
