Couldn't retrieve the data for this visual. Please try again later - new shared dataset experience

Hi!

With fabric launch the way how you connect to Power BI dataset has changed.

Previously, when you was connecting to already developed dataset for all report no new datasets were added.

Now all reports connected to dataset have their own separate dataset.

Because of that when we are publishing Power BI App with those reports connected to separate datasets access provided only to directly connected to this reports datasets, but not original. And this causes "Couldn't retrieve the data for this visual. Please try again later" because it still requires users to have access permission to the original dataset.

For now we have manually added rights to origin dataset, but this doesn't sound as working properly, or we are doing something wrong?

Many thanks in advance!

Hi  @liudaburtseva

How did you add rights to origin dataset ? Can you share the procedure ? You connected dataset as a datasource and then added visual. but visual shows the error reporting, right?

Hi @v-yetao1-msft

To add rights to origin dataset I added empty report which is based directly on origin dataset to the app, updated app, then hid this report and updated the app again (not to add rights manually to dataset).

But from the beginning when I added to app only needed reports which has own datasets based on origin dataset any access automatically wasn't added to the origin dataset, which causes issue and strange, because if access to the origin dataset is needed to see data for reports which are built on datasets under origin dataset, why access to the origin one isn't added automatically as to separate datasets.

And, yes, origin dataset was used as a datasource for the reports (previously it was called shared dataset and connection to was live streaming).  Previously, separate datasets weren't created automatically when you were connecting to the Power BI dataset, all reports were connected directly to the origin dataset with live connection and there were no issues with providing access to the App and data in reports as access was provided from app.

Many thanks in advance!

Hi,
I believe we experience the same issue.

All reports that use PowerBi Dataset as a data source stopped working for the end users.
Error: #Cant display the visual.
The datasets and reports are all within the same workspace.

The end users have no access to the workspace (no viewer/member role) but the access is granted via the app audience.
