'Couldn't load the model schema' message when connected to company VPN

When starting 64bit Power BI Desktop on Windows Server 2012, I immediately get the message "Couldn't load the model schema". Subsequently, When I try to load data, say an Excel file, I get the same message and the load fails.

If I disconnect from the company VPN, startup behaves normally, and the load of the Excel data does not fail.

I am having the same error, but I am accessing the data locally on my computer. Initial load of the data will be fine, but after refreshing/saving this error will occasionally come up.

Hi Team,

Just an observation and it worked 2 times for me.

I decided to install PowerBI from the Windows Store as I was tierd of downloading and installing everytime an update was there.

While still connected on the VPN, when I launched the application from the Windows Store it didn't give me an error with Couldnt load schema.

For a second I thought the issue is fixed, launched from the desktop and got the couldnt load schema error again.

Closed it and Launched back from Windows Storage again and didnt come up with the error, tried refreshing the data still all good, not sure whats so different when launching it from Windows store.

Can others watching the thread and experiencing the issue give it a try and update if they are able to bypass the "Couldnt load schema" when launch from windows store.

Regards,

Arun

Hi @Anonymous, this is strange, but I did run it from the Store as you suggested and once Power BI opened, the error was not there.

I did not manage to get around any testing yet.

Will let you know once I do.

So far Thank you very much!

Can you please test the workaround that I tried above and advise the difference.

For Windows 2012, you will need to install Desktop Experience from the features and log in as a regular account other than "Adminstrator" and you should be able to install PowerBI from Store and Launch it from there.

Not sure what the difference is when launching from Store and directly from the desktop shortcut, but I have tried now multiple times over the last 2 days and haven't got the error.

Arun

Hi,

Power BI Desktop is not a choice for me in the Windows store. There is a 'Microsoft Power BI' selection, but it installs separately than Power BI Desktop, has a different icon, and does not let me launch from the store. I tried uninstalling Power BI Desktop, but still it does not show up in the store.

Any ideas?

I'm also now running 2.58.5103.501 64-bit (May 2018), and the error is not occuring. I've successfully connected to my company's database through the VPN without errors.
