Cannot Sign in to a Sharepoint source using a Microsoft account. Sign in window does not open.

This was not a problem earlier and may seem to have appeared with the latest Power BI Desktop version.

After pressing "Sign-in" no sign-in window opens and everything hangs.

I can get control back by pressing Alt+F4 (close window). Then I get this message:

I tried to see what goes on in Task Manager while the sign in hangs. Power BI seems to try to open several Microsoft Webview 2 windows(2), May introduction of Webview 2 in Power BI be causing this?

Status: Delivered

Hi @Vi12

From July 2021 , infrastructure of Power BI Desktop started to be transitioned from using CefSharp to WebView2. According to official document Enabling Microsoft Edge (Chromium) for OAuth authentication in Power BI Desktop | Microsoft Docs, as of October of 2021, Power BI Desktop will use Microsoft Edge WebView2 for OAuth authentication for all connectors by default. When this happens, it is fully required to run Power BI Desktop. If it’s not already installed, please try to install the new Edge(Chromium) browser from https://www.microsoftedgeinsider.com/download or install the WebView2 redist package on your Power BI Desktop machine and then try your operation again.

This issue has been reported to internal team (ICM 269038329). I will sync with you here once there is any update from our product team. Currently, if earlier solution doesn't work, please revert to Sep version and disable the preview feature of "Power BI desktop infrastructure update" in Power BI desktop Sep version as a workaround .

@Anonymous Thanks for following this up. Unfortunately our enterprise setup just gives me access to the latest Desktop version from October. I am on it to get an exception to upgrade Edge / Webview2, but it takes time. A prectical question: how can I download an earleir version of PBI Desktop?

Hi we are also facing similar issue here. As the PowerBI Admin I am trying to understand the timing of a valid solution for an infrastrusture wide fix or solution. Any idea? Reverting to previous version is not a solution worldwide @v-cazheng-msft .

Thanks.

Michael

@v-cazheng-msft : I have been able to "downgrade" to the September release and this has solved the sign-in issue. Thanks for your guidance.

It would however be good to learn when a long term solution for the Webview upgrade will be available. Can we expect any sort of announcement when this is in place so that we can continue to benefit from improvements both in the October release and subsequent releases?

@v-cazheng-msft

I am using version 2.104.941.0 and I am facing the same issue. I am unsure if it is because of webview2 but the error is exactly the same. Unchecking 'Power BI Desktop Infrastructure Update' did not help 😞

File > Options > Security > Authentication Browser > Enable  "Use my default browser".

This solved the issue

The problem disappeared for me at some point. Not sure whether this was due to a Power BI Desktop or Windows update.
