Workspace Identity

Hi all,

I’m using Microsoft Fabric – Dataflow Gen2 and want to ingest an Excel file stored in SharePoint Online (Get data → Excel workbook) using a SharePoint URL.

I would like to authenticate using Workspace Identity (not an interactive user sign-in / Organizational account).

Question: Is it currently possible to connect to a SharePoint-hosted Excel file from Dataflow Gen2 using Workspace Identity?

If yes, what are the required steps/prerequisites (e.g., Entra ID / SharePoint permissions, specific connector, gateway settings)?

Thanks in advance

Roy

You need to check the tick box below the Dataflow gen2 while creting it. Pls have a look on below screenshot.

  • Hi all,

Just sharing what I found on my side: the Workspace identity authentication option only showed up for me when the connection was set to No data gateway.

If the connection is tied to an on-premises data gateway, the Workspace identity option may not be available.

In my case, some SharePoint connections/URLs seem to force the gateway selection, so I can’t always switch it to “None” — and then I don’t see Workspace identity.

Hope this helps anyone running into the same issue.

Hi, thanks for the info and the links.

One note: on the official Microsoft Learn page for the SharePoint Folder connector, the authentication methods listed for Dataflow Gen2 currently show only Anonymous and Windows.

So at least as documented, that seems to conflict with the idea that Workspace Identity auth is available via the SharePoint Folder connector.

Do you happen to have a Microsoft reference or screenshot showing Workspace Identity as an auth option for SharePoint Folder in Dataflow Gen2?

    Thanks

    Roy

        Hi suparnababu8,

Thanks a lot for your replies and the screenshot — that’s very helpful. Based on that, I’d be happy to mark this as the accepted solution.

One small ask: could you (or anyone else) share a screenshot directly from Fabric showing Workspace identity as an authentication option in the SharePoint Folder connector (Dataflow Gen2 connection settings)?

I’m asking because in my workspace I currently don’t see that option in the UI.

        Thanks again!

  • Hi RouyAlfahel

Yes, MS Fabric Dataflow gen2 is now supports connecting to SharePoint Online using Workspace Identity. But, this is possiible through the SharePoint Folder connector only , not directly connecting with the Excel workbook connector. You will need to configure permissions in Entra ID and SharePoint, and ensure your workspace identity [service principal] has access to the file or folder.

How to use Worjk space identity, kindly read this blog Introducing support for Workspace Identity Authentication in Fabric Connectors | Microsoft Fabric Blog | Microsoft Fabric
