Unable to connect to excel data with Fabric free trial

I have started the free 60 day fabric trial.  I do not have a work or school email/account so I created one using the free Azure trial.  I am now able to login to Power BI (on the service) and am trying to connect to data.  When I click on 'New' I select report, and it then takes me to the screen to connect to data (Add data to start building a report).  For both the excel option and the CSV option it shows Excel (preview) and CSV (preview).  I select Excel.  I review a pop-up to enter URL, etc.  But, I just want to use a file that is on my local so I select Upload.  I receive an error that states:
"Your account does not have a sufficient license for OneDrive for Business to complete the requested action. Please contact your organization's Office 365 administrator".
I have researched and tried to figure out what might be the issue.  I have created a new workspace.  I have an Office 365 subscription (family), but that is under my personal email account.
I am studying for the PL-300 and need to be able to use the service.  Any help would be great.
Thanks!
Josh

Hi @JRCHOWE ,

Yeah, this is a common blocker when using Fabric trial accounts without a proper business tenant. The issue is that Fabric (and Power BI service in general) expects files like Excel or CSV to be stored in OneDrive for Business, which isn’t available on personal Microsoft accounts or free Azure trials unless it's tied to a proper org tenant.

If you're just trying to upload a local file, one workaround is to use Power BI Desktop instead. You can open the file locally there, build your report, and then publish it to the Fabric workspace. That way you bypass the OneDrive requirement during the initial data connection.

Another option is to set up a proper Microsoft 365 developer tenant (free) which gives you OneDrive for Business and other services for testing. You can sign up here:
https://developer.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/dev-program

Hope that helps you move forward with your DP-700 prep.

Hi,

The workaround for this issue , if you unbale to setup onedrive is using git hub repo link.

for all tutorial github links are given in documentation. you need to click the link then github repo will open.

go to  Raw-> right click and select 'Copy Link Address'

Once you have link then go to connect to data source window as shown below and select link to file instead of Upload file.

Though the issue seems resolved, however I faced the same issue and find the workaround to continue the

tutorial practice with above solution. Posted for others to refer in future.

If you find it useful please mark as a solution and give kudos for my motivation to keep replying.

why just as simple thing as uploading excel file requires so much things and so difficult to do. I am just trying to prepare for dp700, but it requires so much bureaucracy.

this one also didnt help as it says I dont qualify for it

Hi @burakkaragoz - thank you for your response.  I set up a OneDrive for business.  I have one month free and then it is $15/mo.  Thank you for the suggestion.

Hi @JRCHOWE

This typically happens when you try to upload Excel or CSV files using the “Upload” or “Add data” options, and the system expects your files to be routed through OneDrive for Business. If your account does not have a OneDrive for Business license, or if you are using a personal Microsoft account (such as one created for an Azure trial or an Office 365 Family subscription), you will not have access to the required OneDrive for Business features, which are only available to business or school acc

Other alternative will be to upload the file in Files section of your WS and then use it

Hi @nilendraFabric  - thank you for your response.  I was able to solve this by setting up a OneDrive for Business license.  I have 1 month free, but then it is $15/mo.  You confirmed what I thought was the issue, and so I dug into setting up the OneDrive - so that was helpful.  Thank you.
