Tableau Connection to Semantic Model Vs Warehouse (Decimal Columns)

Hi Brains Trust,

We have one user that is trying to connect to our MS Fabric Semantic models to do some reporting, but when they do all the Measure columns are coming through as "Text" instead of Decimal and they have to format every column.

Is this a known limitation? Are we setting something up incorrectly?

If he connects Tableau direct to the Warehouse and looks at the same table being exposed by the Semantic Model, everything works perfectly.

Setup

Warehouse

Column in question are formatted as "Float"

Semantic Model

Columns in question, we orignally didn't changing formatting and they where all defaulted to Data Type "Decimal" and format "General"

we have tried changing these to a few different settings and nothing seems to work

  • Hi Byzza,

This is a known limitation when connecting Tableau to Microsoft Fabric Semantic Models using the Analysis Services connector. Tableau does not support this connection type and notes that it may cause issues like numeric columns appearing as text.

    Hi Byzza,

Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Fabric Forum Community.

Please verify the data types or formats of the measures or columns in the semantic model, as Tableau might interpret them as text instead of numbers. Additionally, it doesn't appear in SQL Warehouse because it is clearly defined.

Ensure that the measures in the Semantic Model have a specific data type and format, rather than leaving them as General, so Tableau can accurately recognize them as numeric fields.

      HI v-saisrao-msft

the first image shows that all the data in the database is of type float, and the second image, shows 4 different columns I've tried configuring using different options, all of type decimal with different settings and of the work.

Only the 3rd column was left as type general, all the others had different options
