PowerBI Reports based on Direct Lake Semantic Model are not loading

Hello everyone,

Since 1 week, power bi reports based on direct lake semantic model is not loading. When trying to open these reports, it gives an error "We cannot process this request right now because the OneLake security configuration has changed. Please refresh the semantic model to resolve this issue.". MS support team could not identify the root cause and they said we should have refreshed these models manuelly. However even after refreshing semantic models, after a while these reports are not working. Any help appreciated.

Best regards

is there a specific case open on this issue? I would like to follow what Microsoft is doing to resolve.

Hello @hollifm1,
Sorry for the inconvenience caused, our internal engineering teams are actively working on this issue, and we will share the solution here once it is resolved.

Thank you for your patience.

Since Friday I have been experiencing recurring issues with several Power BI reports. At the beginning, the error appeared only once per day, but now it occurs up to three or more. Same error:
“Cannot load model – OneLake security configuration has changed. Please refresh the semantic model to resolve this issue.” Would it make sense to switch the model from Direct Lake to Import Mode?

Hello @photographica ,

We switched all the models from Direct Lake to Import Mode and all work now. Because we had limited time and Microsoft development could take too long.

Best regards

I face similar challenge. I can see the report is working for me but there are few others getting error.

Hello @mihirsp1988 ,

MS Support team said that there were others facing this issue and they were working on this. But also said it could take few weeks to be fixed.

Thank you for being part of the Microsoft Fabric Community.

Hello @v-ssriganesh,

Unfortunately none of them worked. MS Support team is working about it and they said they were working for a fix but no estimated arrival time. Also they said it was not specific issue for our company, some of Fabric customers had this issue. Thank you for interest

Best regards

Hi @ismail_ozturk,

1) When were these reports published and how long have they been in the power bi service.
2) Were there any changes done to your fabric workspaces where the lakehouse in the last 3 days proir to this issue occured and any changes related to OneLake security roles or configuration changes.

3) were  there any updatres rolled out from microsoft side during this period.
4) who owns this semantic model and Report. did anything specific to this owner change in the Workspace.

Review OneLake security roles You may need to be added to an existing role or create a new one that grants proper access.

Hello @Santhanam,

I am writing my answers below. Thank your for help

1) These reports were published about a month ago.

2) No we didnt change anything including semantic models, lakehouses and reports.

3) I dont know this one. MS is changing something everyday you know.

4) The same user actually and there is no change about it.

The most interesting part is that after manuel refresh the report works but after a while it gives the same error.

Best regards

Refreshing the semantic model manually can temporarily resolve the issue, but it may recur until the security configuration is stabilized.

Try creating a duplicate of the existing role and adding the owner and other users present in the original one into this new role. and check if this fixes the issue.

since you have already mentioned that you had reached out to Microsoft support and they were not able to find the root cause.

im sure microsoft has already taken a note of this issue and will try to fix this in the next 24 to 48 hours.

Hello @Santhanam,

I hope Microsoft will. By the way I dont think it is related to onelake security because when we get error from reports, we can not see any tables in direct lake semantic model. Also I am the fabric admin and ws admin but I have also this error when loading report.

Best regards

Hi @ismail_ozturk

Can you try and publish another copy of this report and check if its working fine.
also try to build a new dummy report from the semantic model , check of you are able to or if its throwing error even to trying to connect to the Semantic model.

also , try to build a dummy semantic model from the lakehouse tables and see if you have permissions to build over the Lakshouse.

then you may have to check the permission or create new roles and add yourself to it.

Santhanam

Can you check if you have this option enabled on your semantic model?
Semantic Model --> Settings --> Refresh

Also, which Direct Lake connection method are you using SQL Endpoint or OneLake?

If SQL Endpoint you can try to refresh SQL Endpoint with this script from Notebook: https://www.vojtechsima.com/post/programmatically-refresh-sync-sql-analytics-endpoint-metadata-in-mi...

Hello @strzala,

The option "Keep your direct lake data up to date" is enabled for all the direct lake semantic models. I dont know the Direct Lake connection method we used. Is there any way to get this info? Thank you for help

Best regards

If you hover over your tables in the Semantic Model view in Fabric you should be able to see something like this

Direct Lake on OneLake:

DirectLake on SQL Endpoint:

Hi @ismail_ozturk

Have you checked the OneLake security roles? You may just need to either be added to a role, or create a suitable one.
