PBI: Import Mode, Direct Query and Direct Lake

I have the PBI which is linked to Lakehouse in Fabric, and I have thought the Storage would be in Direct Lake, but it is not so.

is this meant to be?

  • Hi tan_thiamhuat

I think you are connected your tables via import mode while connecting to your PBI desktop. That's why it is showing as import mode insted of Direct lake mode. Let me explain you indetail.

If you see below image, it's clearly saying it's in Direct samtaic model layout, it's hsowing in serivices.

Now If i come to PBI Desktop, I pulled the same table from my Lakehouse, Now it's showing as direct query and no where it's shwoing import mode and infact it's showing comment at bottom it's connected to PBI sematic model on Live.

Now I'll pull the same table using the Lakehouse with import mode, pls see below image

I hope you are connectd lakehouse with PBI in import mode.

So, please double check once from your end.

    Thank you!!

I am not sure if my trial Fabric account is affecting it also.

  • Hi tan_thiamhuat ,

when you are connecting to the lakehouse, are you leveraging the SQL analytics endpoint, or the OneLake catalog connector?

I believe using the OneLake connector may resolve this as this is the recommendation from the official Microsoft documentation: Direct Lake in Power BI Desktop (preview)

If this helped, please mark it as the solution so others can benefit too. And if you found it useful, kudos are always appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Samson
