Options for Database Mirroring Across Different Tenants in Fabric

Hi All,

I have a use case where I need to mirror a database that is not residing in the same tenant as my Fabric environment. I understand that database mirroring is supported when both the database and Fabric are within the same tenant, but not all clients necessarily have their databases in the same tenant.

I was wondering if there are any options available to mirror a database that resides in a different tenant from the Fabric environment.

Your assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Jaganath

Hi @Jaganath,

Thank you for reaching out to us through the Microsoft Fabric Community Forum.

Database mirroring in Microsoft Fabric requires resources to be within the same tenant, as cross-tenant mirroring is restricted due to limitations of System Assigned Managed Identity, isolation, and compliance requirements.

Below are a few alternative solutions:

  1. Utilise Azure Data Factory (ADF) or Azure Synapse Pipelines to replicate data across tenants. These tools facilitate the creation of data pipelines to transfer data from a source database in one tenant to a destination database in another tenant.
  2. Regularly export data from the external database and import it into your Fabric environment. While this method requires manual intervention, it can be automated using ETL tools.
  3. If only read access to the external database is required, use shortcuts in Fabric. Shortcuts enable a link to the source data without relocating it, allowing you to query the data directly from its original location.
