Microsoft EmployeeHi Andy , The requirement is to capture the "Direct Lake Semantic Model" usage and not the PBI Report usage. The Semantic model can be accessed through multiple client tools like excel , PBI Desktop , SSMS etc. Users can connect to this semantic model and create reports in their own PBI worksapce as well. So we wanted to capture the info around how many users are connecting and using these Semantic Models ( regardless of the client tools they use )

Maybe you can use Azure Log Analytics?
(I don't have experience with it)
