Just about at the end in the Unit 6 exercise, most buttons are greyed out/inactive.

However, copying the URI for the query from the overview section on the right and pasting it to a new browser window did!

Wow, that's a cool method! I never thought that Azure Data Explorer could connect to the Kusto cluster in Fabric. I've never tried to access that link directly from the web browser. Thank you for sharing this!

Have you ever started executing a KQL query before you saw that these buttons were inactive? I've had a previous experience where when a query was running for a long time, it seemed to get stuck, causing me unable to execute other queries.
You could close the Queryset session from the left navigation bar, then try opening the Queryset again. You can also open the relevant KQL database, then open its relevant Queryset from the KQL database explorer. This will give you the same Edit KQL Query experience.
You can also try refreshing the web page, closing the web browser and opening it again.
