How to create a ADLS Gen2 Shortcut when Azure is on another tenant

Hi all,

Currently we use microsoft fabric and power bi on our default company microsoft account. For example username@company.com

However, all of our azure services are on another tenant which we access through another account. For example username@azurecompany.com

We have huge data dumps on our azure account (Azure Datalake Gen2). The advantage I see when using fabric, is that we can access the data via a shortcut --> which menas we are able to access the data on Azure without having to copy it all to Fabric/OneLake.

However, after having some discussion with Microsoft product owners, it appears that it is not possible yet to use an organizational account to create a shortcut, despite that I CAN select my azure account. The strange thing is that this does not work when creating a shortcut, but this does work when creating a dataflow or datafactory connection.

I also tried to create the shortcut using a service principal, but this also does not appear to be possible.

//////////////////////////////////////

To summarize: how can we create a shortcut to azure when all of our azure stuff is on a different tenant (username@azurecompany.com), than the fabric tenant (username@company.com).

This is very important as if we have to copy the data from azure to fabric there is no point in using fabric in the first place.

Unfortunately I do not have a working answer yet. Maybe this simply is not possible as of now.

External data sharing is still in public preview.  You probably need to enable the setting in the tenant

Enable external data sharing in the providing tenant

You must have the Fabric administrator role in the providing tenant to perform these steps.

  1. Go to the tenant settings in the providing tenant.
  2. Find the External data sharing tenant setting (under export and sharing settings), enable the toggle, and specify who in the tenant can create external data shares.

Enable external data sharing in the consuming tenant

You must have the Fabric administrator role in the consuming tenant to perform these steps.

  1. Go to the tenant settings in the consuming tenant.
  2. Find the Users can accept external data shares tenant setting (under export and sharing settings), enable the toggle, and specify who in the tenant can create external data shares.
