How to Monitor Usage Across Multiple Virtual Network Data Gateways in Microsoft Fabric?

Hi everyone,

I’m currently working with Microsoft Fabric and have two different virtual network data gateways set up—one using the older Microsoft.PowerPlatform/vnetaccesslinks policy and another using the newer scalable configuration (possibly with Microsoft.PowerPlatform/enterprisePolicies).

I’m trying to understand how I can monitor and compare the usage between these two gateways. Specifically, I’d like to know:

  • Is there a way to track CU consumption per gateway over time?
  • Can I determine if a gateway is being moderately used, overused, or underused?
  • Are there any built-in tools or metrics dashboards that provide this level of insight maybe in FUAM?
  • Is it possible to set up alerts or thresholds for usage patterns?

Any guidance, best practices, or examples would be greatly appreciated!

    You can see the VNet Gateway CUs in the Fabric Capacity Metrics App.

     

    Don't forget!!! VNet Gateways consume CUs merely by breathing!!! They don't even need to be used.  To add insult to injury, oftentimes they do not go to sleep when not in use (they are supposed to shut down after 30 minutes of inactivity, for example).

     

    Also, they are supposed to autoscale their number of nodes so the notion of "overutilization" is on shaky grounds.

    Hi Rushankpatil,

     

    At the moment, Microsoft Fabric does not expose CU (Capacity Unit) consumption at the individual data gateway level, whether for on-premises or virtual network data gateways.

    However, here’s what you can do:

    1) Install the Fabric Capacity Metrics App to monitor CU by workspace and workload type

    2) Gateway activity – Audit and diagnostic logs

    While CU-level data isn’t tracked, you can monitor connection and query activity per gateway via:

    • Microsoft Fabric Audit Logs (Power BI Admin → Audit log search)

    • Gateway Diagnostic Logs from the Power Platform Admin Center or Azure Log Analytics
      These include:

      • Number of queries and connections

      • Average duration

      • Failed vs successful requests

    This lets you indirectly identify if a gateway is overused or idle.
