Cross Organisation On-Prem Gateway Access in Fabric

Hi

Not sure whether anyone has managed to achieve this or able to provide any solution. Thank you in advance 🙂

Background:

Quite a few of our Fabric implementations have been carried out within the customer’s organisation and we would like to move some of that responsibility to the Fabric Pipelines in fabric in our organisation.

Set-up

The current setup is detailed in the image below and we are looking to reach the Desired – Primary implementation. If that’s not possible, then looking to implement Desired – Secondary.

Main Issue:

The main issue is we are unable to access the on-prem gateway in the customer's organisation from our organisation. The customer has added our team as external users and assigned admin rights on the gateway. The gateway simply doesn't appear in our organisation's gateway listings.

Assistance:

Any thoughts on how best we can obtain access to the on-prem gateway please?  is it even possible? Would very much appreciate any thoughts and input (please feel free to challenge the rationale in the architecture😊)

Thanks
Paul

An On Prem gateway is associated with the tenant in which the account is present via which the gateway was configured.

So either you reconigure the gateway via an account in the required tenant or leverage an account in the original tenant as a guest user or a service account in the original tenant

Hi Nandan

That seems to have done the trick. We tested with another organisation in our region in that worked. Our customers are in different regions to us so we're hoping that selecting our region when installing the gateway on their premises will provide us with access.

Thanks again!

Hi Nandan,

Do you mean Fabric can utilize on-premise gateway created by a guest user from a different organization?

Hi @TheOddOne,

As stated by @NandanHegde, when installing the gateway, if you install the gateway by providing a user/service account email address that belongs to your org, then the gateway will appear in your fabric environment.

Obviously, the data governance side is something to consider.

Nope, what I mean is :

Imagine your SQL server is hosted on tenant a

Your Power BI/ Fabric is in tenant b.

You can download the On Prem data gateway and install it on SQL server but while installing it would ask you to login to an account so in that scenario you can login via tenant b account thereby linking the gateway hosted on SQL server (in tenant a) to fabric in tenant b

Hi Nandan

Many thanks indeed. I'll ask the team to reconfigure the gateway with our org credentials and will revert with results.

Thank you once again.
