Can live-connected SSAS/AAS semantic models be added as data sources in Fabric Data Agent?

Hi All, I have a semantic model that’s live-connected to an SSAS/AAS source. Just wanted to confirm—can this be added as a data source for a Fabric Data Agent? I’m unable to verify it myself since I...

    Hello Hashwanth,
Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Fabric Community Forum.

Live-connected semantic models based on SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS) or Azure Analysis Services (AAS) cannot be added as data sources for a Fabric Data Agent. According to Microsoft documentation, these models are not accessible via the XMLA endpoint, which is required for Fabric Data Agent connectivity. For details, see: Semantic models not accessible by using the XMLA endpoint.

Regarding the "insufficient access" error, this typically indicates missing permissions. To resolve this, please ensure:

    • You have at least Contributor, Member, or Admin permissions in the workspace hosting the semantic model. Check this in the workspace’s Manage Access settings.
    • You need Write permission on the semantic model. Verify this by going to the model in the workspace, selecting Manage permissions and ensuring your account has Write access.
    • The workspace must have the XMLA endpoint enabled for read-write operations and you need sufficient permissions. If the tenant setting "Block republish and disable package refresh" is enabled, only the model owner can access it via XMLA.

    • If the model connects to an on-premises SSAS instance, ensure an on-premises data gateway is configured and that you have access to it.

    Best Regards,
    Ganesh singamshetty.
