From legacy to Fabric: A new guided migration experience through Spectral Core Fabric Workload (Preview)

If you haven’t already, check out Arun Ulag’s hero blog “FabCon and SQLCon 2026: Unifying databases and Fabric on a single, complete platform” for a complete look at all of our FabCon and SQLCon announcements across both Fabric and our database offerings.

The release of the Spectral Core migration workload (Preview) for Microsoft Fabric introduces a more direct way to start and manage database migration scenarios from inside the Fabric experience.

Migration is often the first step in a modernization effort. With this release, customers can begin that process within their Fabric workspace instead of relying on multiple external tools and portals.

Why migration inside Fabric matters

As organizations standardize their approaches to Microsoft Fabric as a unified analytics platform, moving existing databases and systems into Fabric becomes a priority.

Traditionally, migration involves switching between environments, coordinating across tools, and managing separate authentication and governance layers. This can slow projects and add operational overhead.

The Spectral Core Fabric workload brings migration entry points directly into Fabric. Users can discover and initiate migration workflows within the same workspace where they manage their analytics assets.

This supports Fabric’s broader goal: enabling end-to-end analytics workflows in a single SaaS platform while allowing partners to extend the platform with specialized capabilities.

What’s included in the preview

The preview integrates two core technologies from Spectral Core into a single guided experience: Omni Loader, a high‑performance data migration engine for moving large-scale data into Fabric, and SQL Tran, an intelligent SQL translation and validation platform for targeting Fabric Data Warehouse. Together, these capabilities are available directly inside Fabric, removing the need for separate tools, vendor coordination, or manual reconciliation.

As part of the preview, the solution is free for all Fabric users and supports migrations from key Microsoft data platforms, including SQL Server (on‑premises), Azure SQL Managed Instance, Azure SQL Database, Fabric SQL Database, and Synapse Analytics Dedicated SQL Pool.

Built on the Fabric Workload platform

The Spectral Core migration workload is built using the Microsoft Fabric Workload platform Extensibility Toolkit (FET). FET enables partners to integrate their SaaS applications as a native experience in Fabric through the Workload Hub.

For Fabric users, this means:

  • Migration capabilities appear alongside other Fabric workloads.
  • The experience follows Fabric’s UX patterns.
  • Access is centralized within the Fabric workspace.
