New migration experience from Azure Data Factory to Fabric (Preview)

If you haven’t already, check out Arun Ulag’s hero blog “FabCon and SQLCon 2026: Unifying databases and Fabric on a single, complete platform” for a complete look at all of our FabCon and SQLCon announcements across both Fabric and our database offerings.

As more organizations standardize Microsoft Fabric for end-to-end analytics, upgrading existing Azure Data Factory (ADF) workloads is a key step in modernization.

To make this transition simpler and more predictable, we’re introducing a new built-in migration experience that helps you assess, plan, and migrate ADF pipelines to Fabric Data Factory in a few simple steps.

What’s new

The new migration experience is designed to help you understand migration readiness before moving any workloads.

Capabilities:

  • Assess pipeline readiness directly in Azure Data Factory.
  • Understand compatibility gaps at the pipeline and activity level.
  • Migrate supported pipelines into a Fabric workspace.
  • Plan next steps for items that need updates or are coming soon.
This assessment‑first approach helps ensure migrations are intentional, transparent, and low risk.

How the migration experience works

Before you start, ensure you have:
  • An existing Azure Data Factory with pipelines.
  • Access to a Microsoft Fabric tenant.
  • A Fabric workspace where pipelines will migrate.
The migration flow is integrated into the Azure Data Factory authoring experience and guides you step by step.
  1. Run an assessment
Select Migrate to Fabric (Preview), then choose Get started to evaluate pipelines and activities for migration readiness.

2. Review assessment results
Each pipeline is categorized as Ready, needs review, Coming soon, or Unsupported. You can also export a CSV report to support offline review and remediation planning.

3. Mount your Azure Data Factory to Fabric

After reviewing the assessment, select Next to mount your Azure Data Factory to a Fabric workspace and continue the migration flow in Fabric.

Once successfully mounted, continue next steps in Fabric.

Migrate pipelines into Fabric Data Factory

Now continue the migration steps from Fabric UX by selecting Migrate to Fabric (Preview) button. Choose the pipelines you want to migrate and map ADF linked services to Fabric connections. You can either select existing connections or create new ones using the modern get‑data experience, then select Confirm.

Control what you’d like to migrate by selecting the pipelines for migration

Pipelines migrate safely, with triggers disabled by default, so you remain in full control of execution.

Post-migration

Once pipelines are migrated, we recommend the following steps:
  • Validate connections and credentials.
  • Update Global parameters using Fabric Variable Libraries.
  • Run end to end tests to confirm behavior.
  • Reenable triggers as needed.
These steps help you transition smoothly and operate natively in Fabric’s unified analytics environment.
