With Item Recovery in Microsoft Fabric (Generally Available) beginning June 30, 2026, you can now recover deleted items across supported workloads, restore items through the Workspace Recycle bin or REST API, and configure tenant-wide recovery policies.

Why this matters

Accidents happen. Without a recovery window, small mistakes become big incidents for admins and support teams. Item Recovery now gives you a built-in safety net for supported item types, with full control over retention policy.

What's included

  • Workspace Recycle bin and REST API - Restore items through the portal or REST API.
  • Flexible retention - Choose a retention window up to 90 days and adjust it anytime.
  • Growing coverage - Item Recovery includes support for all the item types that are already supported today for recovery in Preview. We're actively working to enable more workloads for Item Recovery.

How Item Recovery works

Item Recovery lets authorized users restore deleted items of supported types within a retention window that you control. When someone deletes a supported item, it moves to a soft-deleted state instead of being removed immediately. During the retention window, the item remains restorable with its content, metadata, and permissions. After the window expires, the item is permanently deleted.

Getting started

Take these steps to get the most from Item Recovery:

  • Review or enable the setting. Go to Fabric admin portal > Tenant settings > Item Recovery and confirm it matches your policy.
  • Choose a retention window. Pick a value (up to 90 days) that balances your recovery needs, compliance requirements, and storage.
  • Update your runbooks. Make sure on-call engineers and support staff know how to restore items.
  • Integrate with governance tools. If you use automation for audit or compliance, evaluate whether Item Recovery's REST APIs and audit events should be part of your workflows.
