workspace capacity usage limit configuration

Consumption limits are needed to prevent some workspace activities from consuming the entire capacity.

I wish it was possible to set a limit on a workspace level on how many CUs the workspace was allowed to use.

And also an option to bundle together workspaces and set a limit on how many CUs these workspaces were allowed to use combined (e.g. dev and test workspaces).

Possibly also an option to prioritize some workspaces (e.g. prod workspaces or critical prod workspaces).

That way, we could reduce the risk of exceeding our capacity and cause problems for critical workloads.

Thanks for your suggestion. As you’re probably aware, we are planning to help capacity admins get ahead of throttling by releasing surge protection for interactive and background jobs soon. This experience will limit capacity overuse by background jobs (throttles background jobs before a full 24-hours of CUs is consumed) to protect interactive users like Power BI users.

We plan to keep building on and improving this surge protection feature to support more granular cases (e.g. at the workspace level) in the future.

This is marked as "PLANNED", but where is this feature on the Roadmap? Which aspect of it is "PLANNED"? Is it just the surge protection for background jobs or is there a separate feature for the actual request on this page, which was for "workspace capacity usage limit configuration". A surge protector on background jobs is not the same as "workspace capacity usage limit configuration", which would ideally be a workspace-level CU max or a percentage. Nevertheless, where are the "surge protection" and/or the "workspace capacity usage limit configuration" on the Roadmap? I don't see either of these things there. Thanks!

The current Surge Protection feature is not sufficient. It only blocks new jobs from starting but does not cancel or limit ongoing jobs. On several occasions, my capacity (F1024 SKU, not a small one) completely froze because just 2 or 3 items were consuming more than 30% each of the total capacity, even with Surge Protection enabled and a 60% threshold configured. It is urgent that Power BI implement a maximum resource consumption limit per item — for example, restricting CPU or memory usage per dataset, refresh, or query — and that the system automatically terminates any job once that limit is reached. It is unacceptable for a product of this scale not to have such a safeguard, as this directly affects the availability of the environment.
