"Live" ODBC connection using Direct Query

Would be great to have the ability to use Direct Query with an ODBC connection. The ability to live query almost any data source would be invaluable.

Our organization is considering to use data virtualization tool to build a centralized data access layer. Power BI is expected to connect to the data virtualization tool through ODBC connection. Direct Query by ODBC is significantly important in this architectural direction. Please contact me if you need more input for this request.

I'm going to be cynical and say they won't do this because it would mean SQL Server isn't special in the Power BI world any more. If you can only direct query against SQL Server, then you might choose it over Oracle or MySQL. If you could use ODBC for direct query, then you could use any database you wanted and SQL Server wouldn't be elevated any more.

Agree with all the comments on this topic. This is a big missing capability. The alternative is to build out connectors to everything, which isn't realistic. We also want to leverage our data virtualization platform (Denodo), Big Data (e.g. Apache Drill), and IoT data sources. Most have ODBC connectors.

Waiting on LDAP for Teradata. Currently using ODBC Import instead, but really need Direct Query. Direct Query for ODBC and LDAP for Teradata is needed asap. Any updates on this?

Struggling for long on the same issue. it is not requirement it is need. Over that I would like to request to product team, Where there every month updates on personal edition, there should be update schedule for every three month (at least ) for power bi report server edition. Otherwise, this tool will be use as a Demo purpose and original project would be deliver using other tool like ODV or Microstrategy.

Facing same issue ,live connection is missing via odbc. Customer is not happy. Is there any recent update on this.
