Microsoft Fabric currently lacks a native Master Data Management (MDM) capability, creating a gap for organizations that need to manage and govern business-critical reference data such as customers, products, suppliers, cost centres, and organisational hierarchies. In many Fabric implementations, master data is maintained through CSV or Excel file drops, SharePoint lists, or custom-built applications. These approaches introduce risks including poor data quality, lack of governance, version control challenges, auditability concerns, and inconsistent business definitions across domains. While third-party MDM platforms such as Profisee can address these challenges, they often represent significant additional cost and complexity, particularly for small and medium-sized organisations that require lightweight master data stewardship rather than enterprise-scale MDM. A native Fabric MDM solution could provide governed data maintenance workflows, approval processes, change history, business-friendly editing interfaces, hierarchy management, and seamless integration with OneLake, Data Factory, and Power BI. This would strengthen Fabric's position as a complete end-to-end data platform and reduce reliance on external tooling for a common enterprise requirement.
