If you setup a data source using the Power BI Analysis Services Connector that shows up in the Power BI online Dataset repository you should allow the use of that dataset directly from the Power BI Designer. This will allow you to publish reports using the already shared dataset and it also gives you a better experience querying a tabular data source then the Power BI Designer does now when connecting directly to the tabular instance. I would say this should also apply to any other 3rd party data source created there for the likes GitHub, Salesforce, etc. You should also be able to open reports that have been published and edited in the service in the same way. ... Hi, At the time of this Preview, MSFT is marketing the new Power BI report designer as a tool for those who don't have Excel 2013. However upon using the designer it is quite evident that it has features that Excel 2013 does not have, such as the ability to have many-to-many relationships without DAX coding and additional chart types (e.g. trees). Plus the Power BI file extension denotes that this seems to be a completely different report format from what we can do in Excel (xlsx files and embedded Power View rdlx). I am wondering if MSFT plans to reconcile those new features in Excel, as well as to push some of the Power BI / SharePoint online features back to on-premise. I think this is a must not only for Power BI designers (the online one and the desktop one), but also the Power View designers (both SharePoint and Excel). We need the ability to be able to align, resize and distribute components in a dashboard/sheet. I mean the controls we normally find with office tools such as: * Alignment: Align left, right, top, bottom, centre, middle. Distribute horizontally and vertically. Snap to grid, view gridlines, set gridlines, etc. * Positioning: Being able to see and specify x and y coordinates for objects. * Sizing: Specify height and width values.
