While DAX is undoubtedly powerful in handling complex, context-aware calculations, it imposes a steep learning curve and obscures basic analytical logic. Tasks that should be straightforward — such as calculating Top N per category — require excessive workaround logic in DAX due to its rigid dependency on filter and row context. This breaks from common, transparent approaches used in SQL (e.g., using RANK() over partitions). My main concerns: The context-driven model makes even basic queries unintuitive. DAX requires more effort for simple outputs than equivalent operations in SQL, Excel, or Tableau. Visuals like Matrix don’t provide native support for “Top N per group,” forcing users to misuse DAX constructs. Request: Please consider adding clearer, user-controlled query constructs, or simplifying the interface for basic analytical patterns like Top N, rankings, and grouped aggregations — without requiring deep DAX expertise. DAX’s abstraction of “context” is clever, but in many scenarios it becomes an obstacle. A balance between power and usability would make Power BI more accessible and effective for all users — not just those who master DAX internals. Dear DAX developers, You’ve created a language so focused on internal “context” that you’ve lost sight of external usability. I'd love to see a new standard button type in Power BI: a toggle button that can be customized and linked directly to: Dichotomous field parameters (e.g., PIT/Cumulative, YoY/Prior Period) Measures that switch logic or visuals Bookmarks for toggling between views or layouts (e.g., floating filter pane open/close) This would function similarly to a filter but with more flexibility and visual clarity. Imagine empowering self-service users to create their own lightweight semantic models by simply dragging tables from a central enterprise semantic model, while in direct lake mode (or any other mode). Users could select only the tables they need, while automatically inheriting existing relationships and measures from the large model. This would make self-service faster, cleaner, and more governed. Currently the creation of Field Parameters in Power BI is not enables in Direct Lake mode,which makes the dashboard build that much more manual. As with Power BI Desktop I find it very useful in validating my data as "flow" to see the actual row count at the bottom left of the screen, rather than just 99+. CoPilot tells me this is not possible, but to instead create a Table.Profile step after each transformation. Recently I came across a tricky problem: One KPI Card Visual taht shows a aily KPI and its last 3 weeks trend was showing towards the end of the day a ZERO value for the KPI (when in fact this was not zero). Upon checking through copilot several dat/date time columns and semantic model setting on the service and teh source data, I enabled in teh visual the show date feature, which THEN showed me that visual thought it was "one day in the future", and the reason was becasue I've tick the "Include Today" on the relative last X units of time: apparentlu when looking in the past the visual logic ALREADY starts counting back from today, but ticking the mark forces it to check "next day". I also saw that this happens towards the END of my country normal office hours so to speack, so perhas some time logic is involved but not accesible.   ... View more
