Currently, Power BI requires all visuals to have a static column for the X-axis. Measures like RANKX or TOPN work only with columns that are known at compile time. When trying to create a dynamic ranking visual where the X-axis can be changed via a slicer, the engine fails because column references are only resolved at evaluation time. This limitation prevents users from building fully interactive Top N or ranking visuals without reshaping data or creating multiple measures/visuals. A built-in ability to reference a dynamic column in DAX measures would: Enable a single chart where users can select the dimension (column) to rank on via a slicer. Eliminate the need to duplicate measures or visuals for each column. Improve usability and reduce model complexity, especially for large datasets with multiple dimensions. Work seamlessly with existing Top N filters, dynamic slicers, and ranking measures. Proposed behavior: Introduce a DAX function or enhancement where a column variable can be used as a reference inside RANKX, TOPN, or other aggregation functions. Ensure it works in all visual types (table, matrix, clustered/bar/column charts) without requiring data reshaping. Maintain backward compatibility with existing static column references. Use case example: A sales operations team wants a Top N chart of revenue by a dimension selected by the viewer. Currently, they must either: Reshape the data (unpivot columns) and build helper measures, or Create separate measures and visuals for each dimension. We manage our workspaces by team, which I think is sensible, but we obviously have senior leadership who want to view reporting across those teams. I want to build a dashboard for those leaders so they can see all the key information from the reporting we create in one place, but the advice from Microsoft is I need to recreate all the reports in a new workspace to create a dashboard that has the visuals on. That's surely a really clunky way of presenting data? Can't I just manage the permissions to the reports and pin the visuals from multiple workspaces? ... View more

This request is to add information about the ITO (Intelligent Throughput Optimization) decision used when processing a copy activity in a fabric pipeline to the JSON output of the copy activity.   This additional run time information would help us understand the cost of running the copy activity.     (This past weekend, we ran into an issue where 100% of our copy activitites tripled in the cost for data movement.  Same volumes.  Same run times.  This issue has since resolved itself but this additional information would have helped us understand what may have changed in the cost calculation.) ... In large Power BI semantic models, it’s common to need calculation groups (such as for currency conversion or time intelligence) that apply only to some measures—typically those with certain characteristics. Currently, the only way to scope calculation group logic (e.g., using ISSELECTEDMEASURE) is to manually list every affected measure. This is difficult to maintain as models grow and evolve.   Problem: there is no dynamic way in DAX to group or reference measures for calculation group logic: You can’t reference all measures in a given display folder. You can’t filter by metadata or custom tags. You can’t check for the existence of a measure or flag at runtime (e.g., with a TRY or IFERROR pattern). You can’t use naming conventions or wildcards in ISSELECTEDMEASURE. There’s no way for report authors to “opt out” of calculation group logic for new measures without requesting a central model change. Impact: Calculation group maintenance becomes tedious and error-prone. Large or decentralized teams cannot easily adapt calculation group logic to evolving reporting needs. There’s no flexible, self-service way to manage calculation group scope. Ideas for Improvement: Allow ISSELECTEDMEASURE to reference measures by folder, tag, or attribute (e.g., ISSELECTEDMEASURE(IN FOLDER "Currency Measures") or ISSELECTEDMEASURE(HAS TAG "Currency")). Introduce a DAX function to check for the existence of a measure or flag at runtime (e.g., TRY([MyFlagMeasure])). Support wildcards or naming patterns in measure selection. Enable more dynamic or metadata-driven scoping of calculation group logic, including per-report overrides. Current Workarounds: Manually maintain long lists in ISSELECTEDMEASURE.
