Adding metadata tagging to Power BI would significantly enhance end‑user searchability by making reports, visuals, and datasets easier to locate and understand. As organizations scale their data environments, users often struggle to find the right report or identify which visual contains the information they need. Metadata tags - such as business terms, data domain labels, departments, or analytical themes - would allow Power BI’s search experience to return more relevant, contextual results. Instead of relying solely on file names or workspace structures, end users could search keywords that reflect how they think about the business, improving discoverability and reducing time spent hunting for the correct asset (this has been such a huge painpoint for our organization as we've scaled up). Metadata tagging would also streamline the integration and reuse of existing visual assets across reports. Today, teams frequently recreate visuals because they can’t easily identify or retrieve previously built components. With metadata tags applied to visuals, datasets, and reports, authors could quickly surface related assets - such as all visuals tied to “financial KPIs” or “supply chain risk” - and embed or adapt them in new reports. This promotes consistency in visual standards, reduces redundant work, and accelerates report development. By enabling structured tagging, Power BI would better support scalable asset management and empower organizations to build upon their existing analytics foundation rather than reinventing it with each new project.
