Hi I'm experiencing unusual behaviour when connecting Power BI Desktop to an on prem Tabular model (2014). Our model has 1000 calculations, any time a user connects to teh Tabular Model, the connection takes 30-40 seconds to complete (time it takes to see the meta data). This happens with every new connection. The server which hosts the tabular model shows the CPU spiking up to 30% per connection therefore 3-5 concurrent connections max out the server. Running profiler trace on the server, i can see that for each connection, a bunch (number of calculations in the model) MDX execute statements are being fired for each calculation in the model which is the reason behind the delay. even though each MDX statement only only milliseconds to run, the number that can execute at any one time is throttled and the sheer number add up, taking on avg 30 seconds to complete. This behaviour doesn't occur when i connect to the tabular model using Excel, where the connection is almost instant and there are no MDX execute statements in the background. In the Power BI service this works slightly differently in that the number of connections is controlled by Power BI/enterprise gateway/Azure Service Bus rather than per user, would it be possible to share more information on how the powerbi.com service manages connections against the on prem server? thanks Rahil ... We have an issue whereby when a user shares a dashboard with another user (not via a content pack), the user receiving the shared dashboard, receives two duplicate emails. Although not a huge issue, it is quite annoying having two emails for the same dashboard share. Is this something to do with the way the users have been set up? Or a known issue within PowerBI? ... This feels like a Win7 setting as I cannot replicate the problem in Win10. To replicate, open a new PBIDesktop instance and try to create a data source from the flash screen or Home ribbon. There should be a popup screen that reads "SQL Server Database" or "SQL Server Analysis Services Database" or "OData Feed". None of these instantiate. Only data you can get to from an "Open" window seems to work, like CSV. Any other data source causes the application to stop responding. The application must be closed via Task Manager. ... Here is the general layout of the case for which the issue is arising. We have a simple report based on a data source of two tables: “Supplier” is a simple list of companies and “SupplierAlias” is a list of alternate names they may be known by. An alias may not yet be associated with a supplier (nullable SupplierID) yet if it has turned up in a data feed (part of the purpose of this report). The data source is a sql database and the model is set up for direct query. The report itself is made up of one table of output with columns from both the source tables with a set of slicers where four of the slicers are columns in the table and one is not. Up to this point, everything has been fine. Now if you select as a slicer a value from one of those included in the table, the table visual fails with an invalid column name error. In this case the column is ‘c2’. This happens to be the Alias column from the statement above generated for the unfiltered set and corresponds to the filter I selected. It appears that there is an attempt to make an optimization of some kind by not retrieving the alias column (we know what he value is) and it is dropped from the inner select statement. The problem is that it is NOT dropped from the where clause and causes the error to be thrown. The statement works if either the alias column is returned to the inner select OR the where statement is dropped. Likely just adding the column back to the inner select would keep the logic simpler and would not really inpact overall performance. One thing that is interesting is that if a second item is selected in the slicer, the generated statement is fine again and the table renders. Alternately, if the slicer which not included as a column, SupplierType, is selected in addition to the alias column then the table once again renders fine. Interestingly, the generated code appears to have been run through a different code path than before since the entire outer wrapped query is not gone as well as the previously offending where clause. ... Since the July update , cannot export data to excel from PBI desktop. The app flags an error, and have sent frown. On closing the error dialog, the app displays "working on it" until the app is stopped from task manager. Tested same export on another PC with still the June version and it works fine !! After my dataset gets refreshed, all the reports updates, and the dashboard tiles write the last update time well. The problem is that the data inside the dashboard tiles does not ! (So the last update time does not match the data in the tiles !) I opened pages in chrome that wasnt refreshed with F5, and stayed open on the dashboard page for many hours (while i view and watch other chrome pages). Power Bi Desktop has been working fine until the August update. Whenever I try to "get data" and select Database then "SQL Server Database" it closes the box as it should but never loads anything. After publishing to report I can only see the title of the visual but not the visual itself. It was visible earlier but not recently. The help info on the visual indicates there are too many values to be able to display and asks me to filter the data. Its possible my dataset has grown but since the visual appears in the PowerBI desktop I'm not sure why it can't display in the browser. ... View more
