Use Designer to connect live to SSAS instead of importing the data

The present Power BI Designer builds the complete query when we select different dimensions and measures from Tabular Models. Also it tries to pull the complete data as part of the report file. It would be great if it will support to only take the structures, using which we will be able to design the reports and apply required filter, only clicking on Refresh/Preview button it should fetch the data based on the filters and combination fields selected in the report.

Yes you are correct, this will help us to reduce the query size. In addition if it is possible to bring the fields (dimensions and measures) into the report fields section with the same structure how it is available in the tabular model it will be great. At present it combines all these selected fields into one large group and includes in report fields section.

This is a must have I think. I don'T see myself using BI Designer if it imports the whole Tabular DB all the time.

also when you have invest time and money to setup OLAP cubes etc... you want to use and reuse it. dumping the data out of these servers is just a non-sense, it was designed to be consumed, not to be extracted into another olap/in memory model. Generally I have complex models with complex calculations and strong security, I just cant dump data out of the server, too slow, too big, consumes huge amount of time, while querying the server directly is fast. its why today I do not promote power bi designer.

I am waiting this feature because current import from SSAS Tabular not working as will as redundant of data.
