As some people have already noted in the comments, we've actually shipped this feature already! It was included as part of our July update to Power BI Desktop. You can read all about it in our blog: https://powerbi.microsoft.com/en-us/blog/power-bi-desktop-july-2018-feature-summary/#tooltips And of course, if you have any other feature suggestions, please make sure to vote on them.

'+ we cant completely customize the tooltips, we can only add on. Ideally the columns used to create the visual should be added to the tootips, so that we can remove them.

for privacy reason. need to hide certain tooltips so that exact values cannot be extracted.

Definitely would be Useful. I would like to remove lat and lon from the tool tip and use a descriptive address. I can display the descriptive address but I cannot remove the coordinates. In my environment, the higher ups don't like seeing coordinates,

would love to have the option to turn off the tooltip as some of the values used for the visual are sensitive and do not want to be shown.

This would be very useful, the tooltips aren't always useful and sometimes misleading. Thank you.

When using numerous calculated fields in the data set, the tooltip only creates additional noise to the report.

Yeah, this would be a useful feature. Even simple show/hide tooltip would do!

I want to vote for the simple possibility to not show (trust on me... This is necessary for many areas) any tooltip, even for the main column value you put in charts. At this moment I am discussing with my Global CIO of a Digital Publicity Agency here in Brazil why the reason I simply cannot remove all tooltips from charts, because our excecutive board does not want to share such information with others. For example they want to not show tooltips when clients hover mouse over bars. This is not possible now and due to this lack of option I can loose all budget investment from our global company to start using Power BI Desktop.
