Stop 'Mashup Container' gobbling up ALL my RAM

Why is it doing this? I'm merging two queries in the Query Editor. The preview is 100 rows. Why on earth is this causing gigabytes of RAM to be consumed? It seems to be loading all the millions of source rows in the background. What's the purpose of doing this in a preview? It's going to do a full load again once I click Apply. Why should I have to wait ages and have my machine killed TWICE? This is a terrible user experience.
