Allowing report designers to set default left click interaction of data points can unlock tens of new UX possibilities with a single feature.
This feature can be added to all visuals which includes a data point selection. E.g., Table, Matrix, Map, Pie Chart, Bar Chart, etc.
Proposed UX Mockup
Proposed options with key benefits and use cases:
- Make Selection is the default option which is current behavior of all visuals. It allows filtering or highlighting other visuals.
- Drill Down option sets default interaction to make drill operation in current visual. (Already available functionality using header icons)
- Drill through option fulfills one the most requested feature from community (forums and ideas.powerbi.com): single, left-click drill through from any data point.
- Page navigation option unlocks new possibilities including dynamic page list in a grid, and each navigation without adding navigation button and second click requirement.
- Bookmark option allows using any visual as bookmark navigator, now with data/measure driven bookmark lists, allowing even RLS!
- Web URL option unlocks existing Web URL conditional formatting option in table and matrix to any visual, including maps, charts etc.
- None option allows report creator to make any visual read only, similar to Power BI Dashboard tiles, without adding extra transparent layers to force any visual to be not interactive.
- Behave Transparent option brings additional UX tricks, such as adding a watermark on top of a visual but allowing selection on the visual at bottom or adding a custom icon on top of slicer to make erase icon always visible. (pointer-events: none)
