I agree, 100% this seems like it should have been implemented LONG ago! I somewhat disagree with others about the number changing on the sort. I think there should be both options. My language my be off, but I think of it as: Dynamic row numbers, that will stay tied to the table regardless of the sort order by the user AND static ones that will stay tied to the data so that if the table is sorted/filtered they'll be out of order. I can see a use case for both.
