Quick Calc Total by Heirarchy

When add a field containing values under a descriptive field hierarchy I would like to be able to summarize the value by that hierarchy. For example: patient accounts reoccur multiple times in a data set over time - summarizing total amount per Account would make it possible to create a histogram for number of accounts by range of total account balance.
