More date format options in Power BI Service, more English language options in Power BI Service, and date format should not default to MM/DD/YYYY

The date format in Power BI Service is currently dependent on the display language setting. For English speaking users this leaves two options:

  • Display language: English (United States) - date format will be MM/DD/YYYY which is not desirable for the majority of English-speaking users
  • Display language: Default (browser language) - date format is reliant on user's setting their browser language correctly (creating increased risk of user error as browsers often default to US English), and in some situations (e.g. email subscriptions) Power BI Service defaults to MM/DD/YYYY regardless of the user's preference

For English speaking users outside of the United States, neither of these options are acceptable.

There needs to be an option to change the date in Power BI Service to other formats such as DD/MM/YYYY. This could be resolved by:

  • Having more English language options for display language than just US English (e.g. UK English and AU English)
  • Option to separate date format from the display language in settings (e.g. the default could be as per display language settings, but this could be changed to a specific date format that overrides the date format in the display language)

Ideally both of these options would be implemented for flexibility.

The latter option would allow for more date formats, such as YYYY-MM-DD as per ISO 8601. The ISO 8601 standard is used by many governments and global organisations. Where a date format is not available, Power BI should default to YYYY-MM-DD as it is an ISO standard, and not to MM/DD/YYYY.
