The current PowerBI Semantic Model (SM) refresh setup and ui is sub-par. There is not way to setup custom time, pick tables, or cron style syntax to schedule the refresh.
This request is to deliver an improved semantic model refresh that will:
- enable setup refresh schedules (multiple schedules)
- enable selectinng the tables (or even partitions) to be included in each individual schedule (e.g. frequently changed tables could be in the high interval schedules, static data in the schedule for once a week)
- each schedule could be created, modified, paused, deleted
- would support the CRON style scheduling
- would support providing parameters as you can do now to enhanced refresh via api (refresh type, retry interval, timeout, etc)
This refresh could be underpinned by the fabric data pipelines, however:
- it would have its own tenant admin setting. It could bypass the Fabric teanant setting in case Fabric is not enabled. Even the companies that don't enable Fabric could benefit from this funcitonality.
- capacity setting would determine how many scheduled refreshes could be set on model (3 max).
- will enable the use of the fabric data pipeline only for the purpose of the semantic model scheduled refresh
- if the fabric is not enabled, or fabric is enabled only for the groups that the user is not a member of, the user will not have access to the fabric data pipelines. This is to avoid any extreme user adoption and misuse of the data pipeline in large implementations of PowerBI.
