I know the concept as a row & column area, in which e.g. multiple column areas with different column filters can be defined.

This is a feature I have seen multiple clients requesting for while working in different domains..

I have a project where this would be perfect. We are implementing this in Excel using a Power Pivot table, and then a series of complex dynamic array formulas, but it is less than ideal. Would love to see this visual implemented, or functionality added to the existing Matrix visual.

That would be a great improvement - what we need is basically the same thing as the Tablix in SSRS

An example use case here: https://community.powerbi.com/t5/Desktop/Matrix-with-mix-of-measures-in-rows-and-columns-Recreate-Excel/m-p/1719454#M679748

Tableau allows these kind of tables, please implement this in Power BI

This should really be an option given SSRS has done this for years via tablix.

There must be a technical reason behind it's omission, but it's driving me nuts. I can't get buy-in for Power BI from senior management, as when they ask for the most simple example reports (e.g. 6 months trend with YTD and budget for current month/current YTD only), I can't deliver them.

It's a major reason I can't migrate to Power BI. From a financial presentation perspective, this product is so hard to work with at the moment.

Yep a simple companion matrix option would also do the trick , add the companion visual next to the main matrix and it operates like a matrix but uses the rows from the main visual. Should be easy and would be extremely flexible
