Granular Control Over File Upload on Member / Contributor

Currently, users with Member and Contributor roles in Microsoft Fabric workspaces are allowed to freely upload files such as Excel and CSV. While this flexibility may be useful in agile environments, it poses a significant risk to data governance, especially in enterprise or regulated settings.

Problem:

  • There is no way to restrict file uploads by file type (e.g., block only CSV or Excel).
  • There is no way to differentiate upload permissions based on user roles.
  • There is no approval or validation mechanism for manually uploaded data.
  • This can lead to:
    • Data sprawl and duplication
    • Compliance violations (e.g., GDPR, ISO 27001)
    • Loss of control over data quality and lineage

Request:
Introduce features that allow administrators to:

  1. Block or restrict file uploads by file type (e.g., Excel, CSV, JSON).
  2. Configure upload permissions based on user roles within a workspace.
  3. Enable an approval workflow for manually uploaded files.
  4. Monitor and receive alerts for unauthorized uploads.

Expected Benefits:

  • Stronger control over data quality and provenance.
  • Compliance with internal data governance and security policies.
  • Reduced risk of errors or regulatory breaches.
  • Safer adoption of Microsoft Fabric in enterprise environments.
