Function 'CALCULATE' is not allowed as part of calculated column DAX expressions in DirectQuery models

I'm connecting to a SQL server in DirectQuery mode. While I can add a calculated column I can't use the Calculate function to generate the content of that column. Error Returned is "Function 'CALCULATE' is not allowed as part of calculated column DAX expressions in DirectQuery models."
