Feedback for Microsoft: Improve Data Type Handling Consistency in Power BI

Issue Description:

Power BI Desktop and Power BI Service handle data types differently, leading to unexpected errors when refreshing reports in Power BI Service. Specifically, reports that work without issues in Power BI Desktop sometimes fail in Power BI Service due to type mismatches, even though the data appears valid locally. This inconsistency makes it difficult to troubleshoot errors and disrupts workflow efficiency.

Expected Behavior:

Ideally, Power BI Desktop and Power BI Service should handle data types consistently to prevent mismatches during refresh. At the very least, Power BI Desktop should provide warnings before publishing reports that might encounter refresh errors in Power BI Service.

Suggested Improvements:

  1. Ensure Consistent Data Type Handling – Make Power BI Service’s data processing more aligned with Power BI Desktop to prevent unexpected refresh failures.
  2. Pre-Publish Validation in Power BI Desktop – Introduce a feature that warns users before publishing if data types might cause issues in Power BI Service.
  3. Enhanced Error Messages in Power BI Service – Improve the error descriptions during refresh failures to specify exactly which field or transformation is causing the issue.
  4. Better Documentation & Troubleshooting Tools – Provide clearer guidance on how to resolve type mismatch errors, including common pitfalls and best practices.

Why This Matters:

This inconsistency leads to unnecessary troubleshooting time, especially for users working with SharePoint lists or cloud-based data sources. Aligning data handling behavior would streamline report development and prevent avoidable disruptions.
