In a world drowning in data, clear, intentional visualizations aren't just nice-to-haves—they're tools for smarter decisions that drive positive change, from climate action to equitable healthcare. That's why I'm submitting this request for more granular control over graph tooltips, inspired by Tableau's elegant approach. Currently, Power BI's default tooltips dump everything from the visual's fields, overwhelming users and diluting the narrative. We need report creators to take the wheel fully, curating exactly what shines through on hover.
The Problem
- Overload by Default: Tooltips auto-include all fields in the visual (e.g., every measure and dimension), leading to cluttered, noisy pop-ups that bury key insights. This forces workarounds like creating dedicated tooltip pages—powerful, yes, but cumbersome for iterative design and scalability.
- Limited Precision: No native way to selectively hide fields, reorder them dynamically, or format them (e.g., custom labels, conditional icons, or rich text) without jumping through hoops. Compared to Tableau's tooltip editor—where you drag/drop fields, add static/dynamic text, and tweak formatting on the fly—Power BI feels rigid.
- Impact: This hampers accessibility and user experience, especially in complex reports. End-users miss the forest for the trees, slowing adoption and real-world impact.
From recent docs and community chats (as of mid-2025), custom report-page tooltips are a step forward, but they're not seamless for everyday authoring. Let's bridge that gap!
The Proposed Solution: Tableau-Inspired Tooltip Mastery
Introduce a dedicated Tooltip Editor pane in the Visualizations sidebar, right alongside Format and Fields. Key features:
- Opt-In Fields Only:
- Ditch the "show all" default. Start with a blank slate—report writers explicitly add fields via drag-and-drop from the Fields pane.
- Checkbox to toggle "Auto-include visual fields" for legacy simplicity, but off by default for new visuals.
- Full Customization Control:
- Field Selection & Order: Reorder added fields with drag handles; hide/unhide individually.
- Display Formatting: Per-field options like:
- Custom labels (e.g., "Revenue (USD)" instead of raw field name).
- Conditional formatting (e.g., color-code values > threshold red).
- Rich elements: Bold/italic, hyperlinks, or even mini-sparklines/images tied to measures.
- Layout Options: Grid vs. list view; multi-line wrapping; max width/height sliders to prevent overflow.
- Advanced Twists for Power Users:
- Dynamic Content: Embed DAX expressions for computed tooltip values (e.g., YoY growth %).
- Viz-in-Tooltip Lite: Quick-embed mini-charts from the same dataset without full page creation.
- Theming Sync: Auto-apply report theme colors/fonts, with overrides.
- Accessibility Boost: Built-in ARIA labels and keyboard-hover support for tooltips.
