At present, scalar user-defined functions (UDFs) in Fabric Data Warehouse utilize scalar UDF inlining, which restricts the use of UDFs in queries that leverage common table expressions (CTEs).
Data-access-based scalar UDFs—those referencing tables or views—are frequently employed within ETL processes for tasks such as table lookups, data cleansing, and enrichment.
CTEs are an essential and increasingly prevalent feature in the data industry, widely adopted by both practitioners and various tools. Consequently, the current limitation hinders the full utilization of scalar UDFs and prevents effective integration of these two important concepts.
