I’d like to suggest enhancing the integration between Power BI and Excel by enabling a direct live connection from a Power BI table or visual into Excel.
Current limitation: Today, users must export data from a Power BI table into a file and then create a connection in Excel. This process introduces inefficiencies, version control risks, and potential use of outdated data.
While Excel can connect to Power BI datasets, this requires access and modeling knowledge and does not preserve the visual-level filtering or table structure already defined in Power BI.
Proposed enhancement: Allow users to establish a live connection from a selected Power BI table or visual directly into Excel, preserving:
- Applied filters and slicers
- Selected columns and layout
- Data context of the report page
Business value:
- Eliminates manual export steps and reduces process time
- Ensures Excel dashboards always reflect real-time data
- Improves auditability and consistency for financial workflows (e.g., accruals, PO tracking)
- Aligns Power BI as a governed data source while allowing Excel for analysis
This capability would significantly improve productivity for users who rely on both Power BI and Excel for operational and financial reporting.
