Direct Query for Power BI datasets should still work when based on a template app after version update
When you build a dataset based on top of a dataset that is coming via a Template App from AppSource using DirectQuery for Analysis Services, the connection will get lost as soon as you update the app from AppSource. Neither the workspaceId nor the datasetId change when updating the App but as the name of the workspace changes the dataset using Direct Query for AS loses the connection.
The only workaround is to go back to Power BI Desktop, connect to the dataset again and republish it. This is an extreme downside of using Template Apps as the potential using DS for AS is huge and gives a lot of flexibility to individualize apps coming from AppSource. We have multiple medium-sized customers that do not have the infrastructure/knowledge to implement big solution on their own so Template Apps are an absolutely perfect fit for them to also get into BI.
